Former Pakistan cricketer Ramiz Raja has said that cutting down salaries of Babar Azam and his teammates for poor performance in 2024 T20 World Cup is not right.
Raja's comments came after multiple reports claiming that Pakistan Cricket Board is set to demote Babar and his men for dismal performance in T20 WC ongoing in the USA and West Indies. "As I have said before, this is a knee-jerk reaction and you can not improve the standard by increasing or decreasing the pay of the cricketers," Raja said, as quoted by Cricket Pakistan. "This is beyond me.
Cricketers should be paid, simple as that. They have a limited career and PCB has a lot to give to the cricketers," Raja said. "If you decrease or withhold the salary of a workforce then it will result in the workforce leaving the job. This is an incredibly delicate matter that as a punishment you are decreasing or holding back the salary of someone," he added. It is to be noted that Pakistan crashed out of the T20 World Cup after losing two of the four matches played in the group stage. Pakistan lost against the co-host USA and arch-rivals India while winning against Ireland and Canada in group stage of the tournament. There are reports doing rounds of changes in PCB selection committee as well.
The current selection panel was formed in aftermath of Pakistan not reaching last four stage of the 2023 ODI World Cup. Most recently, Pakistan appointed new coaches as well which included former India coach Gary Kirsten taking charge of the limited-over side and former Australia pacer Jason Gillespie taking over Test side. After Pak's exit in the T20 World Cup, Kirsten who had taken over the side at the tournament, lashed out at the players for lack of unity.
