Defending champions England have taken another big step towards defending their title and have made it to the semi-finals of the T20 World Cup 2024. England, captained by Jos Buttler, crushed the USA by 10 wickets in just 10 overs in their last match of the Super-8. With this, England also became the first team to reach the semi-finals. The stars of England's victory were captain Butler, fast bowler Chris Jordan and spinner Adil Rashid, who did not let the USA do anything.
In this Group-2 match played in Bridgetown, Barbados, America batted first but the entire team collapsed for just 115 runs. Nitish Kumar, Corey Anderson and Harmeet Singh played short innings from their side but apart from them no batsman could make a significant contribution. The team lost the wicket of opener Andris Gaus in the first over of the innings, while 4 wickets fell in the last over.
Adil Rashid played an important role in bringing America to this state. Veteran leg spinner Rashid dashed America's hopes of a big score by taking the wickets of its two most important batsmen, Aaron Jones and Nitish Kumar. Then when it became impossible for America to reach a big score, Jordan took 4 wickets including a hat-trick in the last over and bowled out the entire team for 115 runs. He became the first bowler to take a hat-trick in the T20 World Cup for England.
England had to win this match at any cost to remain in the race for the semi-finals and to secure their place, they had to achieve this target in 18.2 overs. This is because the last match is to be played between South Africa and West Indies and the net run rate of both these teams was higher than England. In such a situation, if England achieved this target in 18.2 overs, it would have overtaken South Africa in NRR. In such a situation, their place in the semi-finals would have been confirmed because if West Indies wins, all three teams will have 4-4 points but South Africa's net run rate will decrease even more.
Captain Butler took the responsibility of doing this in his own hands and with explosive batting led the team to victory in just 9.4 overs. Butler hit an unbeaten 83 runs in just 38 balls, which included 7 sixes and 6 fours. In this too, Butler hit 5 sixes in a single over against Harmeet Singh. In this way, the net run rate of England (1.992) surpassed not only South Africa (0.625) but also West Indies (1.814).
