The controversies surrounding India's legendary wrestler Bajrang Punia are not coming to an end. He has been in constant controversies ever since he opened a front against former Wrestling Federation of India chief Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh last year and now he has been caught in an anti-doping case before the Paris Olympics, due to which he has been suspended.
Bajrang, who lost in the selection trials for Olympic qualification, is still hoping to go to the Olympics but he has suffered this setback before that.India's anti-doping agency, NADA, has suspended Tokyo Olympics bronze medalist Bajrang Punia for the second time in two months. NADA temporarily suspended Bajrang on Sunday, June 23, for refusing to give samples for dope test. NADA had suspended Bajrang in the same case exactly two months ago on April 23, but then this decision was reversed.
Then Bajrang appealed against it in the Anti-Doping Disciplinary Panel (ADDP), from where he got relief for some time. Then ADDP stayed the decision of NADA and said that it had failed to give notice related to the allegation to Bajrang and hence this suspension was cancelled. Now on Sunday, NADA suspended Bajrang along with giving him the notice.
In its notice, NADA told Bajrang that he is accused of violating Article 2.3 of the National Anti-Doping Rules 2021 and hence he is being suspended. Bajrang has time till July 11 to appeal against this decision.
According to a PTI report, Bajrang's lawyer has said that he will appeal against it.This matter is related to the selection trials held in Sonipat on March 10, where Bajrang had refused to give urine sample for the test. Bajrang had then asked the agency why the team that came to his house to collect samples in December 2023 had arrived with an expired kit. Bajrang had also emailed NADA regarding this but did not receive a reply and hence Bajrang refused to give the sample.
