It was a night to remember for Afghanistan and their fans around the world as the Rashid Khan-led side scripted history by defeating Australia in the Super 8 game of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024 at Arnos Vale Ground in Kingstown, St Vincent.
Afghanistan’s innings was anchored by openers Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Ibrahim Zadranwho defied challenging conditions with a 118-run opening stand, setting a record against Australia in T20Is. Despite Pat Cummins‘ impressive spell, including his second consecutive hat-trick, Afghanistan managed to post a competitive total of 148/6. Their ability to weather Cummins’ onslaught and still set a challenging target spoke volumes about their determination and skill.
During Australia’s chase, Afghanistan’s bowlers, spearheaded by Gulbadin Vice and Naveen-ul-Haqturned the tide in their favor. Australia struggled from the outset, losing key wickets early and failing to build partnerships. Naib’s remarkable figures of 4/20 earned him the player-of-the-match accolade, while Naveen and the rest of the bowling attack provided crucial support.
Their disciplined line and length, coupled with strategic variations, kept the Australian batsmen in check throughout the innings. The final blow came in the last over, sealing Australia’s fate at 127 all out and marking a memorable victory for Afghanistan. While the players rightfully received praise for their exceptional performance, fans also lauded the coaching staff, particularly bowling coach Dwayne Bravo. Known for his illustrious career as a former West Indies all-rounder and his astute understanding of the game, Bravo’s coaching has evidently played a pivotal role in Afghanistan’s recent success.
Under his guidance, Afghanistan’s bowlers have developed into a formidable unit capable of competing with and outplaying top-tier teams like Australia.https://twitter.com/im_mahirKhan/status/1804728103349923882
