Shreyas Iyer, who was omitted from the central contract list earlier this year, may also find a place in the national side again after captaining Kolkata Knight Riders to the IPL title in May.
The captaincy role for the Zimbabwe tour will likely be assigned to a senior player. But with many new faces set to be named in the squad, who can be the player that will be given the captaincy role? Who will lead Team India in Zimbabwe series? If selected, Hardik Pandya or Suryakumar Yadav are favourites to lead the team, but with the pair coming into the year following injury lay-offs, they may also be rested for the Zimbabwe series alongside seniors Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli and Jasprit Bumrah. As mentioned earlier, Pandya's selection will depend on whether he requests a break, while Surya has already gained leadership experience by captaining the T20 team against Australia at home and during an away series in South Africa. If the two are rested, then it will come down to two other players depending on their selection in the squad. Wicketkeeper-batter Rishabh Pant and batter Shreyas could fit the role, having led their teams in the IPL. There is also a chance for Ruturaj Gaikwad, who has captaincy experience from IPL and the Asian Games, to lead the side should he be selected. The same can also be said of another opening batter in Shubman Gill, who is likely to be included in the squad.
