Former India player Sunil Gavaskar was not pleased with Rishabh Pant for wasting a DRS in the Super 8 match against Afghanistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. The Men in Blue were put under pressure by the rival bowlers, with Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli (24) failing to score heavily.

Rohit tried to be aggressive against Fazalhaq Farooqi but was caught by Rashid Khan. He scored 8 runs off 13 balls. Kohli was looking comfortable before the spinners put a brake on his scoring rate, leading to a reckless shot. The former India captain failed to clear the long-off area, and Mohammad Nabi grabbed his catch.

Rishabh Pant played glorious shots during his short stay, amassing 20 runs off 11 balls. The southpaw hit 4 fours. Rashid Khan wrapped him on the pads, and the umpire didn’t hesitate to declare the Indian wicket-keeper out.

Pant was plumb, but he decided to challenge the umpire’s decision after consulting with Virat. It proved costly as India lost a DRS, and Rishabh had to return after the third umpire upheld the on-field umpire’s call.

Gavaskar, who was sitting in the commentary box, questioned the need to use technology. a

“Rishabh Pant was looking good but I don’t know why he played that shot. He shouldn’t have taken a DRS as the ball hit on his back pad. If the impact would have been on the front pad, thete was a chance of his survival but not with the ball hitting the back pad. Pant shouldn’t have wasted a DRS,” Sunil Gavaskar said on Star Sports.
