David Johnson, a right-arm fast bowler who played for the Indian cricket team, died in Bengaluru on Thursday morning at the age of 52. According to the latest information, Johnson has committed suicide. The former international cricketer from Karnataka was born on October 16, 1971 in Arasikere, Karnataka, he also represented India in international cricket in the mid-1990s.
Johnson made his Test debut for India against Australia in October 1996 and played a total of two Test matches. The highlight of Johnson's career was bowling at a speed of 157.8 km/h during a Test match against Australia. His last Test match was against South Africa in Durban in 1996. Despite showing potential with his speed, his international career was not long and he did not play One Day Internationals (ODIs) for India.
However, his domestic career involved playing for Karnataka, where he contributed to the team's success in domestic competitions. He had his best performance in the 1995-96 Ranji Trophy season by taking 10 wickets for 152 runs against Kerala, which brought him national recognition. However, everyone was surprised why he did not play ODI cricket for India despite having such pace.
Johnson's death has sent a wave of mourning in the cricket world. Many former Indian cricketers and BCCI secretary Jay Shah have also condoled Johnson's death. Former Indian great cricketer Anil Kumble posted on Instagram, writing, “Sad to hear the news of the demise of my cricket partner David Johnson. Heartfelt condolences to his family. Gone too soon “Benny.”
At the same time, Gautam Gambhir also mourned the death of Johnson through a post on Instagram. He wrote, 'I am saddened by the demise of David Johnson. May God give strength to his family and loved ones.'
