The West Indies team was on full rampage during their Group C match against Afghanistan in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 at the Daren Sammy International Stadium in St. Lucia. The explosive duo of Nicholas Pooran and Johnson Charles equalled the record for most runs scored in a single over in T20I cricket. Pooran blasted 36 runs off Afghanistan bowler Azmatullah Omarzai in the 4th over of the first innings.

Pooran opened the over with a towering six on the first ball. Azmatullah delivered a no-ball that Pooran dispatched to the boundary. Pooran was bowled on a free hit. Visibly under pressure from the onslaught, four more runs were given away in form of leg-bye.

Pooran was in an aggressive mood, smashing the Afghan bowler for a four and two sixes in quick succession. This explosive over yielded 36 runs, propelling West Indies to the highest-ever powerplay total of 92 runs in the T20 World Cup. Omarzai’s over was marred by 10 extras, including 5 wides, a no-ball, and 4 leg-byes.

Pooran’s fiery heroics earned him a spot on an elite list, which also includes three Indian cricketers. Yuvraj Singh was the first batter to score 36 runs in a single over, achieving the feat by smashing six sixes off England’s Stuart Broad. The list also features Rohit Sharma and Rinku Singh, who both scored 36 runs in an over of Afghanistan’s Karim Janat.
