Lucknow: Former Pakistan captain Shoaib Malik has fiercely targeted the current captain Babar Azam and asked him to leave the captaincy. Let us tell you that this reaction of Malik has come after the poor performance of the Men in Green in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. He believes that after such a poor performance, Babar should resign from the captaincy. Actually, in the T20 World Cup, the Pakistani team could not progress beyond the group stage and their World Cup campaign ended.

The Men in Green won just two matches in the group stage, first against Canada and then against Ireland, but they could not continue with these two victories and suffered defeat. The Pakistani team suffered a surprise defeat in the Super Over at the hands of co-hosts United States in their first match and after this they were defeated by arch-rivals India by 6 runs. After winning the first two matches, the road to the Super-8 became difficult for them and now they are out. Malik has given a big statement while talking to Ten Sports on this matter.

He said, “I think if this had happened during my captaincy, I would have immediately resigned and focused on my cricket. This happened to me during the year 2009-10, when I was asked to captain for a year but I refused it. The main reason for this was that I had to focus only on my cricket.”

Malik further said, “I am not saying this just for the sake of saying but it is so and Azam's figures are also telling a similar story. As a batsman, Babar's average in T20 cricket is 48.48 but as a captain it drops to 37.28. If there had been any improvement in Azam's captaincy, he should have remained in this position but this has not happened at all. The captain is the one who gets the best performance from the player. He captained three T20 World Cups, one ODI World Cup and two Asia Cups but could not win a single tournament.”
