New Delhi: Smriti Mandhana shattered a 13-year-old record held by the legendary Mithali Raj after smashing a brilliant knock of 117 runs in the first ODI against South Africa at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium in Bengaluru on Sunday, June 16. Mandhana fired with the bat as India hammered South Africa by 143 runs in the game to go 1-0 up in the three-match series.
Mandhana turned out to be the saviour for India after the hosts suffered a top-order collapse, batting first in the game.
India were left reeling at 55/3 in the 12th over before Mandhana combined with Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma to share two important stands and help the Women in Blue post a strong total on the board. The southpaw added 37 runs for the 4th wicket with Rodrigues (17) before sharing a crucial 81-run stand for the sixth wicket with Deepti, who scored a valiant 37 off 48 balls. Mandhana's 117 was laced with 12 fours and a solitary six and helped India finish with 267/8 in 20 overs. It was her sixth ODI ton and helped her break Mithali's all-time record for the highest individual score by an Indian batter in women's ODIs at home.
