Sanjay Manjrekar: Team India has played all its group stage matches in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. They won their first three matches of the tournament against Ireland, Pakistan and USA. At the same time, their last match against Canada was canceled due to rain. Even though India remained unbeaten in the group stage, the form of Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma remained a concern for the fans. Now before the start of the Super 8 stage, former Indian player Sanjay Manjrekar has made a big statement about the form and future of these two veterans.
Sanjay Manjrekar responded
Former Indian player Sanjay Manjrekar, while talking to news agency PTI, has reacted on the form of Team India captain Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli. He says that both the veterans have a lot of experience and they can play match-winning innings in the knockout stage. He said,
“If you have selected players like Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli in the squad, then you have also selected their experience. You want to field your experienced players in the World Cup when it is really needed. So, I have no problem if some players are not in form.”
“They play decisive innings in the semi-finals or finals to win the title. If a young player comes forward, it is a bonus, like it happened with Inzamam-ul-Haq for Pakistan in 1992. The senior players have to make major contributions and that is why I think the selectors prefer experience in the T20 World Cup or World Cups in general.”
Rohit – Should Kohli retire?
At the same time, when Sanjay Manjrekar was asked a question about the future of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, he tried to avoid it. He said,
“I think this question should be asked to the chief selector what his plan is and Rohit or Virat can tell what their plan is. How is the selection committee going to think? I think there is a lot of time left in the tournament before they think about their future.”
Such has been the performance
Virat Kohli has completely flopped in the T20 World Cup 2024. He got out for just 1 run in the first match against Ireland, 4 runs against Pakistan and a golden duck against the USA. On the other hand, captain Rohit Sharma managed to score a half-century of 52* runs in the first match against Ireland, but after that he got out for 13 runs against Pakistan and 3 runs against the USA. In such a situation, it is now expected that both these giants will show good performance in the Super 8 stage.
