T20 World Cup: When and who will Team India face in Super-8, what will happen if it rains? Know every detail

There are only 5 matches left in the group stage of T20 World Cup 2024, which will end on June 17 with the match between West Indies and Afghanistan. After this there will be a one-day break, then the Super-8 match will be played from June 19. A total of 8 teams are going to participate in this round, out of which the names of 7 teams have been confirmed.

If the Bangladesh team wins its match against Nepal, then it will be the eighth team of this round. On the other hand, if Bangladesh loses, it will be decided by the match between Sri Lanka and Netherlands. Now only 3 days are left for the Super-8 to start, so let's know about the rules related to it.

Which teams are included in Super-8?

20 teams participated in the first round of the T20 World Cup. They were divided into 4 groups of 5 each. The top-2 teams from these four groups have qualified for the Super-8.

India and America from Group A, Australia and England from Group B, West Indies and Afghanistan from Group C, South Africa and Bangladesh/Netherlands from Group D have reached the Super-8.

What will be the rules in Super-8?

Like the group stage, all the teams in Super-8 have been divided into two groups. Group-1 has India, Australia, Afghanistan and Bangladesh/Netherlands. Group-2 has USA, England, West Indies and South Africa. All of them will play one match each with the other three teams of their group. Like the first round, 2 points will be awarded for winning, zero for losing and 1 point each will be awarded if the match is cancelled due to rain.

On the basis of points and net run rate, the top two teams of both the groups will go to the semi-finals. Also, let us tell you that no reserve day has been kept for any match in Super-8.

How did the group get divided in Super-8?

The groups in Super-8 have been divided through the seeding system. Actually, before this World Cup, ICC had introduced this system to make the travel of fans easier. ICC had done the seeding of the top-8 ranked teams. In this, India was seeded as A1, Pakistan as A2, England as B1, Australia as B2, New Zealand as C1, West Indies as C2, South Africa as D1 and Sri Lanka as D2.

In the first round, 2 seeded teams were placed in each group. ICC had earlier decided the grouping, venue and date of these seeded teams for Super-8. So that if these teams reach Super-8, then the fans know about it in advance and do their preparation in time.

For Super-8, ICC had placed A1 (India), B2 (Australia), C1 (New Zealand), D2 (Sri Lanka) in Group-1 and A2 (Pakistan), B1 (England), C2 (West Indies), D1 (South Africa) in Group-2. Now this question may come in your mind that among the seeded teams, Pakistan, New Zealand and Sri Lanka have already been eliminated, then how was their group decided.

Actually, ICC had made a rule that if a seeded team does not qualify, then its seeded seat will be given to the qualifying team of that group. For example, when Pakistan (A2) was eliminated, its seeding was taken by America. Similarly, Afghanistan took New Zealand's (C1) seat.

Will there be an advantage in topping the first round in Super-8?

Before the tournament started, ICC had fixed everything from group to venue and date through seeding. In such a situation, the question arises whether the team that topped its group during the first round will get any benefit or not. The answer is no. There is no benefit in topping the first round. All the teams in Super-8 will play their matches on the pre-decided group, venue and date. There will be no change in this. This means that the remaining matches of the groups from which two teams of Super-8 have been decided during the first round have no importance.

When and where will India play the Super-8 matches?

India is in Group-1 in the Super-8 round of the T20 World Cup. The Indian team will play its first match against Afghanistan in Barbados on June 20. After this, Team India's next match will be against Bangladesh/Netherlands in Antigua on June 22. India will play the third match of this round against Australia in St. Lucia on June 24.
