Defending Champions England is in danger of being knocked out of the T20 World Cup 2024 tournament as their last match in the group stages has been delayed due to heavy rainfall at Antigua.
They are in the third spot of the Group B points table with three points in three matches. Heavy rain has delayed the toss for England’s crucial game against Namibia at Sri Vivian Richards Stadium.
Updates from North Sound, Antigua
11:30 PM IST: With rain continuously pouring down, the match will start to lose overs from 12:00 AM IST (June 16).
11:00 PM IST: The rain stopped and the ground supporting staff started to remove covers. But started raining after a few minutes.
10:00 PM IST: The rain has been on and off today and the toss has been delayed due to rain.
This is a must-win game for England as they need to stay alive in the Super 8s race. If England wins the game, they will need Scotland to lose their last match of the Group stages against Australia.
In this case, England will qualify for Super 8s based on the net run rate. If the England vs Scotland game gets washed out, Scotland will enter the Super 8s. England’s first match in the ICC tournament against Scotland ended with no result as rain interrupted the match.
Then they lost the match against Australia but secured an 8-wicket difference victory in the match against Oman. During the match against Oman, England chased the target of 48 runs in 19 balls giving a huge boost in the Net Run Rate. On the other hand, Namibia has only one victory out of three matches they played in the tournament and has been knocked out.
Scotland are in second place in the Group B points table with two wins out of three matches they played. They will play their last group-stage match against Australia on Tuesday’s clash.
England has only a thin chance of qualifying for the Super 8s. The cutoff time for the 5-over match is 12:16 AM IST (June 16).
