Afghanistan’s approach centered on their own strengths. Captain Rashid Khan stressed the importance of focusing on their abilities. “Now, we need to beat the teams with our own skills rather than think about the opposition and that’s the only thing I have been telling the guys. Just make sure we look into our skills,” Rashid said during the post-match presentation ceremony. This mindset proved successful as Afghanistan defended a total of 159 runs.
Several players shone in this match. Rahmanullah Gurbaz scored 80 runs off 56 balls, including five fours and five sixes. His partnership with Ibrahim Zadran, who added 44 runs, gave Afghanistan a strong start. Together, they posted 103 runs for the first wicket by the 15th over. Afghanistan finished their innings at 159 for six.
Afghanistan’s bowlers delivered an exceptional performance. Left-arm seamer Fazalhaq Farooqi took four wickets for just 17 runs. He had earlier claimed five wickets against Uganda. Captain Rashid Khan also contributed significantly, taking four wickets for 17 runs. This included the crucial wicket of New Zealand captain Kane Williamson.

New Zealand, chasing 160 runs, struggled from the start. They were bowled out for 75 runs in just 15.2 overs. Their fielding was also below par, missing several opportunities to dismiss the Afghan openers. New Zealand captain Kane Williamson acknowledged the team’s poor fielding. “Our fielding didn’t help our cause without a doubt. That would be the most frustrating part for me. It is something we pride ourselves on, so that was very disappointing,” he said.
Cricket is a significant source of joy for Afghans, both in their homeland and abroad. Rashid Khan expressed gratitude to the fans. “They don’t miss our games. We play at 3 am, 4 am, or 1 am, they’re always up. Not only in Afghanistan, all around the world, wherever they are, they’re going to watch the game. They don’t miss the game,” he said. This victory, he believes, will bring immense happiness to the fans.
This win is particularly significant for Afghanistan. While they have achieved notable victories in ODI World Cups, such as against England, Pakistan, and Sri Lanka, this was one of their best performances in a T20 World Cup. “We haven’t had those victories in T20 World Cups. We had in ODI, but in T20, I feel like this was one of the best performances from the guys,” Rashid Khan said.
New Zealand’s loss to Afghanistan has left them with a tough road ahead. Their next match is against co-hosts West Indies in Trinidad. Captain Williamson reflected on their preparation and performance. “Everybody’s preparation was different, and for us, it’s just head down and focusing on what we can do and prepare as well as we can. We certainly did that to the best of our ability. So, no excuses, but yeah, incredibly frustrating performance-wise,” he said.
Afghanistan’s victory over New Zealand in the T20 World Cup is a testament to their focus and skill. With standout performances from players like Gurbaz, Zadran, Farooqi, and Rashid Khan, they demonstrated their potential on the global stage. This win has brought immense joy to their fans and marked a significant milestone in their cricketing journey. Meanwhile, New Zealand faces the challenge of bouncing back and improving their performance in the upcoming matches.
