The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) is reportedly considering the option of nominating renowned Indian cricketer Mohammed Shami as a candidate from West Bengal in the upcoming Lok Sabha elections.

Shami, who represents Bengal in the Ranji Trophy and remains active in the state's domestic cricket scene, has been approached by the BJP with the proposition to contest the elections. However, as of now, the 33-year-old has not confirmed his decision.

According to sources, the BJP sees Shami as a potential candidate who could enhance their prospects in the upcoming general elections in West Bengal. There have been internal discussions within the BJP indicating that his candidacy might particularly resonate in minority-dominated constituencies in Bengal.

If the cricketer agrees to the BJP's proposal, he could potentially contest from the Basirhat Lok Sabha constituency, which has garnered attention following recent unrest in the Sandeshkhali village.

Mohammed Shami is currently on a hiatus from international matches as he recuperates from a recent surgery. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has confirmed that Shami will commence his rehabilitation at the National Cricket Academy in Bengaluru after a successful heel surgery. This announcement follows his Achilles Tendon surgery in London on February 26th.

The 33-year-old has been sidelined since India's ICC Cricket World Cup 2023 campaign. During the marquee event, he emerged as the leading wicket-taker, aiding the team in reaching the final by claiming 24 wickets in seven matches at an average of 10.7 and an economy rate of 5.26.
