Another strong team out of T20 World Cup, Afghanistan surprised everyone, entered Super-8

T20 World Cup: Afghanistan defeated Papua New Guinea (PNG) by seven wickets in the 29th match of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup 2024.

The match was played on 14 June at the Brian Lara Stadium in Trinidad. Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan won the toss and decided to bowl first. In this match, PNG gave Afghanistan a target of 96 runs to win, which it achieved with 29 balls to spare.

Papua New Guinea’s team was all out for 95 runs in 19.5 overs. In reply, Afghanistan achieved the target by losing three wickets in 15.1 overs.

With this victory, New Zealand’s dream has been shattered. With Afghanistan’s victory, New Zealand’s team has been eliminated from the World Cup.

Afghanistan became the second team to reach the Super 8 from Group C. The West Indies team has already qualified from this group. Apart from this, India, Australia and South Africa have also reached the playoffs. That means so far five teams have reached the Super 8 and only three places are left.

In this match, Gulbuddin Naib scored an unbeaten 49 off 36 balls for Afghanistan which included four fours and two sixes. While Mohammad Nabi remained not out after scoring 16 runs. Wicketkeeper batsman Rahmanullah contributed 11 runs and Azmatullah Umarzai contributed 13 runs.

For Papua New Guinea, Eli Nao, Samo Kamiya and Norman Vanua took one wicket each.

After losing the toss and coming to bat first, four of PNG’s batsmen were run out and the entire Papua New Guinea team could not play even 20 overs. PNG scored 95 runs in 19.5 overs. Wicketkeeper batsman Kiplin Doriga scored the highest 27 runs. Apart from this, only Eli Nau and Tino Ura could reach double figures.

Fazalhaq Farooqi took the maximum of three wickets from Afghanistan. Naveen Ul Haq got two and Noor Ahmed got one wicket.

Four batsmen of PNG were run out.
