Shubman Gill and Avesh Khan are set to return home after India’s last league match of the ICC T20 World Cup 2024 against Canada in Florida on June 15.

Gill and Avesh are in Florida with the rest of the players but will not travel to the West Indies for the Super 8 stage.

The decision to release the opening batter and pacer wasn’t part of the orginal plan and it was a late call taken by Rahul Dravid, Rohit Sharma and other members of the coaching staff. Apart from Gill and Avesh, Rinku Singh and Khaleel Ahmed are the other two travelling reserves but both will remain with the team.

“The.decision has been taken by the Indian team management. Both Gill and Avesh were supposed to travel to the West Indies but the decision makers have now decided to release them,” says a well-placed source.

The four reserves trained with the main squad in New York during the first three games. Khaleel, Avesh and Rinku were seen cheering for the Men in Blue from the stands during contest vs Pakistan but Gill was not there. The right-handed batter had stayed back in the hotel.

Rohit Sharma’s team won three games at the Nassau County International Cricket Stadium in New York. The weather forecast in Florida is not good and there has been persistent rain in the last 24 hours.
