India‘s star fast bowler Mohammed Siraj was awarded his second ‘best fielder’ medal after India’s victory over the USA in their third ICC T20 World Cup 2024 match on Wednesday, June 13. Siraj’s stellar fielding performance, which included two catches and a run-out, helped restrict the USA to 110/8 in their 20 overs.
Siraj’s spectacular leaping catch to dismiss Nitish Kumar (27 off 23) in the 15th over played a crucial role in securing the win. Rishabh Pant and Suryakumar Yadav were the other two nominees but Siraj was named the winner. Legendary India all-rounder Yuvraj Singh then presented the pacer with the medal and praised all the match performers.
“Congratulations, Arshdeep, on the Player of the Match award. Your batting skills were impressive in the last game. Suryakumar Yadav, you played exceptionally well, adapting your style to the situation. Shivam, it was lovely to see you get going and finishing the game. Well done, all of you. I’m sure you’ll continue to enjoy the game without any pressure. And of course, Siraj, you were the game-changer with that fantastic catch. Truly the best fielder of the match,” said Yuvraj Singh.
“Although I was nominated in every match in the last World Cup, but never won the medal. However, my hard work was not wasted, and it has ultimately paid off,” said Siraj in the video.
The right-arm seamer delivered an economical 4-over spell, conceding just 25 runs without taking a wicket. Earlier, he had bowled impressive spells of 0/19 (3 overs) against Pakistan and 1/13 (3 overs) against Ireland. Meanwhile, India secured qualification for the Super 8 stage of the global tournament by defeating the USA by 7 wickets.
The Men in Blue struggled early on, with key batters Virat Kohli (0 off 1), Rohit Sharma (3 off 6), and Rishabh Pant (18 off 20) falling cheaply. However, an unbeaten 67-run partnership between Suryakumar Yadav (50* off 49) and Shivam Dube (31* off 35) steered the team to victory in 18.2 overs. After topping the Group A table with three straight wins, India will next face Canada on June 15 in Lauderhill, Florida.
