Team India has made it to the Super-8 round of the T20 World Cup 2024. The Indian team has reached the next round by winning 3 consecutive matches in the group stage. This performance of the team is important because its most important batsman Virat Kohli has not been able to contribute anything in it yet. Kohli has scored a total of 5 runs in 3 matches and this is disturbing and once again the same question has arisen that till when will Team India continue to use Kohli like this? If he is not scoring runs in the opening, then should he not be returned to the number 3 position again?
The Indian team did make it to the next round but its journey was not very easy. The reason is the pitch of the New York Stadium, which troubled every team. From Kohli to Rohit Sharma, Babar Azam, Suryakumar Yadav and batsmen like Heinrich Klaasen, Quinton de Kock have also failed here. Despite this, Kohli's failure is the most serious and the most noticeable among all of them. All these batsmen have definitely played at least one strong innings but Kohli has scored only 5 runs in 3 innings, in which he was out on the first ball against America.
The pitch can definitely be blamed for this but the other aspect of this is that Kohli is expected to perform the same way as he did in IPL 2024. Kohli had scored 741 runs while opening then and was batting explosively. With this expectation, he was sent to open but the result has been exactly the opposite and Kohli is currently failing completely.
In such a situation, shouldn't Kohli be removed from opening and sent to bat at number three, so that Team India can take full advantage of his experience. Although no match is to be played in New York now, but the fear will remain that Kohli may lose wickets in this way in the upcoming matches as well. In such a situation, the right option is to send Kohli to bat at number three and make Yashasvi Jaiswal open in his place.
However, this is not going to be that easy as it can also affect the balance of Team India. Yashasvi opening and Kohli coming in at number 3 means a change in the batting order of Rishabh Pant, who has been consistently doing well at number 3. In such a situation, he may have to replace Shivam Dubey at number-5, while Dubey may have to be dropped from the playing eleven. This is because in any case, Team India would like to field 5 main bowlers. Therefore, captain Rohit Sharma and coach Rahul Dravid will have to think of some solution before the Super-8 round begins.
