Delhi: In the Indian Premier League, Gujarat Titans' head coach Ashish Nehra has said a big thing about the captaincy style of his team's two captains Hardik Pandya and Shubman Gill. The former Indian fast bowler, who has been serving as the head coach of the franchise since its inception in 2022, has worked closely with both the star players.

Under the leadership of Hardik Pandya, GT won the title in its first season in 2022 and the team was the runner-up in 2023.

After Hardik's departure in 2024, the command went to Shubman Gill. Although the team finished 8th in 2024, Gill took the team to the playoffs in 2025.

At the same time, in IPL 2026, under the leadership of Gill, Gujarat team once again reached the finals, where it had to face defeat at the hands of Royal Challengers Bangalore in the title match.

“The two are as different as the North Pole and the South Pole.”

During an event in Kolkata, when Nehra was asked to compare the two, he said that both are completely different from each other.

Nehra said, “Both are completely different, like the North Pole and the South Pole. When he took over, no one had much experience of captaincy. But you learn along the way. Today Gill is captaining India in two formats and he will get better with time.”

Had full confidence in Hardik, Gill remains a bit calm

Explaining the difference in the captaincy styles of the two, Ashish Nehra said, “One thing is certain that Hardik had full faith in me, which was the best thing. He was always eager to learn. If something was not right, he himself would come and ask.

You can talk to him about a lot of things.”

Talking about Gill, Nehra said, “On the other hand, Shubman Gill is a bit reserved and shy, but there is nothing wrong in that. Every person is different. Gill may not ask as many questions or talk as much as Hardik, but he talks about work. He observes things very carefully and is always ready to learn.”

“Gil is still learning, will improve further”

Shubman Gill was made the captain of India's Test and ODI team last year (after captaining Gujarat for two seasons). Talking about his future, Nehra said that he will improve further.

Nehra said, “He is still learning. He is only 26-27 years old and it is not that he has been captaining for many years. Right now he has been captaining for only 1-2 seasons. As time passes, he will learn things and become a great captain.”
