Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are preparing for a new era after Stephen Fleming stepped down as head coach to take charge of the England cricket team. Fleming’s 18-year association with CSK produced five IPL titles, making the search for his successor a major decision for the franchise.
Who should replace Stephen Fleming as CSK coach?
Former CSK opener Matthew Hayden has now thrown his support behind Dinesh Karthik for the vacant coaching position. Hayden believes Karthik has the experience, local knowledge and coaching exposure required to take CSK forward.
Karthik’s connection with Chennai could be one of his biggest advantages. The former India wicketkeeper-batter was born in Chennai and has deep links with Tamil Nadu cricket. Hayden feels having a local figure in the coaching setup could strengthen communication with younger players and add a stronger regional identity to the franchise.
Karthik has also started building his coaching career since retiring from international cricket in 2024. He joined Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) as their batting coach and mentor, working alongside experienced head coach Andy Flower. According to Hayden, that exposure to top-level coaches has helped Karthik understand the tactical and technical sides of the game.
“Well, I feel like Dinesh Karthik would be a really good choice for CSK. He has been kind of under the tutelage of other world-class coaches, including names like Andy Flower, for example, who have had very successful playing and coaching careers. But being a local Tamil boy, I feel like that is a really important piece,” Hayden said while speaking on the Wisden Cricket podcast.
He added: “It’s not a must have, but for Tamil Nadu cricket in particular, I just felt like CSK has always been backed by the Tamil Nadu Cricket Association. So I feel like some local flavour would be the next best step for CSK.”
“CSK notoriously picks from afar. You know, they drive over fish to get to fish. There have been very few players that have actually come from Tamil Nadu itself. They play everywhere else. The one thing I’ll say is it’s very difficult to be a foreign coach in the IPL as well. I give great credit to those that do it because there are some natural language barriers, especially not so much the seasoned campaigners and veterans of Indian cricket, but which sides are littered with.”
Poor IPL 2026 campaign for CSK
CSK had a disappointing IPL 2026 campaign, finishing eighth in the points table and missing the playoffs. They won just 6 matches out of 14 to club 12 points in their tally.
With Fleming’s departure leaving a significant void, the franchise could opt for a fresh approach under new head coach.
