With the 2027 ICC ODI World Cup on the horizon in South Africa, Zimbabwe, and Namibia, India's core philosophy is slowly taking shape. At the helm of the new ODI captaincy, Shubman Gill looks upon a young team, but one that has its share of experience and firepower, and which he feels has the right mix of flexibility to make an impact in the Southern African climate.

Despite the good fundamentals, the manner in which the squad selection is being made, about both senior players' futures and the possible inclusion of young all-rounders, suggests that the race for the final 15 is by no means over.

The Batting Unit: Leadership and Transition for Team India

The top order in the team is led by the captain, Shubman Gill. He has a rich ODI career beyond the 2025 World Cup, with 1051 runs at 65.68, making him India's first-choice opener for the long term. Along with him, the reliable 37-year-old Virat Kohli, who has been scoring 1035 runs at 64.68 per innings, holds the No.3 position with equal consistency.

Meanwhile, there is uncertainty around the No. 1 spot as there have been reports that the Indian selectors are considering dropping captain Rohit Sharma and inserting youngster Yashasvi Jaiswal in the top order in his place. However, with his vast experience, Rohit Sharma still retains his place in the team for the time being. Shreyas Iyer is the first-choice No.4 and also has the experience of serving as a deputy to Kohli and Gill. The No.5 position is covered by KL Rahul, who provides much-needed solidity in the middle order while also filling up the wicketkeeping role.

In the spin department, Axar Patel has cemented his spot as the main spinner in the all-rounder department after a big leap in his batting consistency, with Washington Sundar offering an off-spinning option.

The main event is the battle for the two remaining pace bowling slots. High-bounce seamers Prasidh Krishna and Harshit Rana – the latter was India's leading ODI wicket-taker in 2025 with 26 wickets before being usurped by Mohammed Siraj – have displaced the experienced Mohammed Siraj as the next best options. Kuldeep Yadav is the main spinner, offering a vital middle-over wicket-taking option.
