Australia have named their squads for the upcoming white-ball series against England. However, they have left out a number of their key players. A total of eight games will be played between the two nations, consisting of three ODIs and five T20Is. The series will begin on November 13. However, Australia are leaving star quicks Pat Cummins, Mitchell Starc and Josh Hazlewood out of the squad due to their upcoming fixtures in the ICC World Test Championship against both New Zealand and India.
The ODI series will begin in Perth on November 13, followed by the second and third matches in Adelaide and Hobart on November 15 and 18. From there, the two sides will play the shortest format of the game. The first of the T20Is will occur in Melbourne on November 21. The following four games will be held in Gold Coast, Brisbane, Sydney and Canberra. The series will conclude on December 2.
In addition to the three high-profile quick bowlers, Nathan Ellis will miss the ODI leg of the tour as he continues to recover from a side strain picked up during the September Test series against South Africa. With a few key players missing, plenty of exciting young players have been named in both squads.
Mahali Beardman and Oliver Peake, who were previously involved in the ICC Men's Under-19 Cricket World Cup, have both been named in the 14-player ODI squad. Alongside them are young, emerging all-rounders Jack Edwards and Liam Scott. Nikhil Chaudhary, Joel Davies, Lachlan Shaw, and Sam Harper have also been brought into the T20I squad.
Australia will also be missing several key players during the T20I series. Travis Head, Matthew Renshaw, Cameron Green, Alex Carey, Josh Inglis and Cooper Connolly will miss out on playing in the shortest format as they are all involved in the ODI squad. This means some more young players will have a chance to shine.
Australia selection chair George Bailey believes these matches will give players an opportunity to gain more experience.
“This ODI and T20 is a great opportunity for a number of players. Many of those players will have had opportunities on recent tours but this is a great opportunity for them to showcase their talent against some very strong opposition.” (Source: ICC)
Bailey was also confident that Liam Scott will continue to progress throughout the tour. He added that Mahali Beardman has been putting in some impressive performances for Australia A and believes he can become an all-format international.
“Liam Scott has come back into the ODI squad. We are excited that he takes every opportunity to learn and he has really improved his game over the last 12-18 months following some strong performances. Mahali Beardman has been playing really well for Australia A recently and we are super excited to have him back in the national team in the ODI and T20 formats. We think he can really develop into an all-format player moving forward.” (Source: ICC)
Lachlan Shaw was also praised by Bailey for his potential in the T20 format. Sam Harper has been putting in consistent performances domestically. Jake Fraser-McGurk and Mitch Owen have also returned to the T20I squad. Their aggressive style of play will add some strength to Australia's middle order.
“Lachie Shaw is a very talented cricketer. We think he will develop quickly and has a very powerful game to play in the T20 format. Sam Harper has played really well domestically. He is in a really good spot with his game at the moment and is playing his style of cricket really consistently in all formats. Jake (Fraser-McGurk) and Mitch (Owen) have returned to the T20 squad, and we think they can be a difference maker with their strike rate. They are great. examples of players who have had an opportunity at the International level and have continued to work on their game since.” (Source: ICC)
