Scoring a big individual hundred against India is never an easy task, but producing a match-defining innings while chasing a huge target requires an even greater level of skill and composure. Over the years, several international batters have risen to the occasion against India, producing memorable performances in high-pressure ODI run chases.
The latest name to join this elite list is Shai Hopewhose unbeaten 162 at New Chandigarh on Saturday powered West Indies to a stunning five-wicket victory after India posted 351/7.
Hope’s spectacular knock now sits at the top of the list of the highest individual ODI scores in a successful run chase against India, ahead of Sri Lanka’s Tillakaratne Dilshan and England’s Andrew Strauss.
Here is a look at the top three individual ODI scores vs India
1. Shai Hope – 162 not out vs India, New Chandigarh, 2026
Shai Hope produced the finest innings on this list when West Indies chased down India’s imposing 352-run target in the third ODI in New Chandigarh on October 3.
The West Indies captain played a remarkable knock of 162 not out off just 143 balls, remaining at the crease until his team crossed the finishing line. His innings combined patience, calculated aggression and superb shot selection as he dealt with the pressure of a massive chase.
India had posted 351/7, with KL Rahul producing an unbeaten century, but Hope ensured that the total was not enough.
Rather than attempting to attack every delivery, Hope built the chase carefully before increasing the tempo as West Indies approached the target.
His ability to remain composed while the required run rate continued to demand aggressive batting was one of the defining features of his innings. Most importantly, Hope’s knock came in a successful chase, making his contribution even more significant.
2. Tillakaratne Dilshan – 160 vs India, Rajkot, 2009
Before Hope’s spectacular performance, Tillakaratne Dilshan held a prominent place among the batters who had produced enormous scores while chasing against India.
Dilshan scored a magnificent 160 off 124 balls in Rajkot in December 2009, showcasing the attacking style that made him one of Sri Lanka’s most dangerous limited-overs batters.
The Sri Lankan opener was capable of taking the game away from opposition bowling attacks during the powerplay, and his ability to improvise made him particularly difficult to contain.
His 160 demonstrated both aggression and endurance. Dilshan had to maintain a high scoring rate while also ensuring that he remained at the crease long enough to influence the outcome of the chase.
But unfortunately, Sri Lanka fell short by 3 runs while chasing a mammoth 415 target set by India.
3. Andrew Strauss – 158 vs India, Bengaluru, 2011
England’s Andrew Strauss occupies third place with a brilliant 158 (145) against India in Bengaluru at the ODI World Cup 2011.
Strauss was renowned for his technically sound batting and ability to build an innings. His 158 was another example of his capacity to perform under pressure against a strong Indian side.
The England opener combined conventional strokeplay with excellent concentration as he took on the Indian bowling attack. His long innings gave England a strong foundation during the 338-run chase and demonstrated why Strauss was regarded as one of England’s most dependable batsmen during his international career.
As far as the result of the contest is concerned, the match ended in a tie with both teams finishing on 338 in their stipulated 50 overs.
