Rohit Sharma broke Sachin Tendulkar’s long-standing record for the fewest innings taken to score 10,000 runs as an opener in the fifty-over format. He achieved the feat in the third ODI against the West Indies in New Chandigarh on Saturday (October 3). Rohit reached the milestone in 202 innings, 12 fewer than Tendulkar, who touched the mark against Australia in 2004.
Rohit is only the fourth opening batter to post 10,000 runs, joining the likes of Tendulkar, West Indies legend Chris Gayle and Sri Lanka’s great Sanath Jayasuriya in the list. The 39-year-old needed two runs before the game, and he reached the record by flicking pacer Jayden Seales for two runs on the third delivery of India’s innings.
| Player | Innings as Opener | Milestone Match |
|---|---|---|
| Rohit Sharma | 202 | v West Indies, Chandigarh (Oct 3 2026) |
| Sachin Tendulkar | 214 | in Australia, Brisbane (18 Jan 2004) |
| Chris Gayle | 268 | v New Zealand, Manchester (22 Jun 2019) |
| Sanath Jayasuriya | 303 | v England, The Oval (20 Jun 2006) |
In the second fixture, Rohit became the third Indian batter after Tendulkar and Virat Kohli to accumulate 12,000 runs in one-day internationals. Rohit scored 101 runs off 75 balls, with the help of 10 fours and 6 sixes.
Rohit has been under pressure since the reports of him not being in the scheme of things for the 2027 World Cup surfaced. Although the BCCI has denied all the speculations, sources revealed that the current selection panel is not in favour of continuing with the batter. In his last three innings, he has smashed two hundreds, and now even the decision-makers wouldn’t dare to touch him.
With Ajit Agarkar’s departure as head of the selection committee, Rohit can breathe a sigh of relief, but all eyes will be on him in every match the Men in Blue compete.
If Rohit continues to score runs, he will make his life easier.
