A brilliant knock from Virat Kohli and Shubman Gill set up an 8-wicket win over the West Indies in Thiruvananthapuram.
The duo went on to smash centuries in the chase as Men in Blues secured a 1-0 series lead. Meanwhile, Virat Kohli also completed his 55th ODI century, extending his list of centuries across formats. Bowling first, India restricted West Indies to 295 runs, where Kuldeep Yadav excelled with bowling returns of 4/40.
Justin Greaves smashed a century while John Campbell and Amir Jangoo went on to smash fifties.
West Indies openers John Campbell and Justin Greaves posted 85 runs in the powerplay and put a 135-run stand for the 1st wicket.
Campbell scored 62 runs before being dismissed by Kuldeep Yadav. Carty, who came to bat at No.3, got dismissed by Prasidh Krishna for 13 runs.
Kuldeep Yadav bagged his second wicket, dismissing Shai Hope for 12 runs, while Greaves smashed 101 runs off 108 deliveries. Kuldeep bagged his third wicket, dismissing Greaves as West Indies lost 4 wickets for 198 runs.
Kuldeep Yadav bagged his fourth wicket, dismissing Jewel Andrew for a golden duck. Chase added 24 runs while Forde added 7 runs.
By the end of 50 overs, West Indies scored 295 runs, with Jangoo remaining unbeaten with 58 runs.Chasing the target, India’s Rohit Sharma and Shubman Gill opened the innings scoring 70 runs in the powerplay. Despite the former’s dismissal for 32 runs, Shubman Gill and Virat Kohli posted a 150+ run partnership for the second wicket.
Gill smashed a 108-ball 110, which included 13 fours and 1 six, while Virat Kohli smashed an unbeaten 88-ball 139 runs. He remained unbeaten with 139 runs, which included 10 fours and 9 sixes.
Virat Kohli went on to cross 15000 ODI runs far quicker than Sachin Tendulkar.
He completed the feat in 303 innings while Sachin Tendulkar completed it in 377 innings.In the 42nd over, India went on to score 300 and completed the chase. Kuldeep Yadav was named player of the match.
Speaking at the post-match presentation, Kuldeep said, “I actually loved the batting from Shubman and Virat bhai; it was a special innings from them. It feels awkward to receive the Man of the Match award, seeing the way Virat bhai batted; it was an outstanding innings.”
