Ajit Agarkar may be set to vacate his post as the chief selector of the senior men's team in the not-too-distant future, with ex-India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel and ex-spinner Pragyan Ojha also being considered as possible candidates to replace him, reports NDTV.

Agarkar's CVC contract is due to end on October 4, with rumors of his extension surfacing in the media recently. Although the initial reports suggested that he could stay in the post till the 2027 ODI World Cup, the latest story says that it might not happen.

Ajit Agarkar's Final Selection Meeting Could Have Taken Place

The latest development comes after Agarkar led the selection committee, which retained the squad for the upcoming white-ball series against West Indies and picked the Rest of India team for the Irani Cup.

As per NDTV sources, the meeting could have been Agarkar's last as he is set to step down as chief selector. The BCCI's Annual General Meeting due on Friday may also have significance for the decision.

Agarkar took over as the chief selector in July this year with Chetan Sharma as his deputy. Under his leadership, the Indian team created history by winning the 2024 T20 World Cup and 2025 Champions Trophy.

India's ODI team also made a statement by reaching the final of the 2023 ODI World Cup. During his tenure, the transition of the Indian cricket team to a new era in Test cricket commenced with the likes of Rohit Sharma, Virat Kohli, and Ravichandran Ashwin quitting Test cricket.

Parthiv Patel and Pragyan Ojha in the Race

Former India wicketkeeper Parthiv Patel and spinner Pragyan Ojha are the two prominent names who are speculated to take charge as the chairman of the senior men's selection committee.

Both Parthiv and Ojha have had a rich IPL journey, with the former winning three IPL titles with Gujarat Titans and the latter winning the same with Chennai Super Kings. Ojha is already a part of the selection committee, whereas the former is associated with the Gujarat Titans in the IPL.

The change in the head of the selection committee comes at an important juncture for Indian cricket as the 2027 ODI World Cup is around the corner. The next chief selector would have a crucial role to play in regard to making all-important decisions about the squad, players' upliftment, and more in an intense schedule of international cricket.

However, it must be noted that the BCCI has yet to officially announce the departure of Agarkar and appoint his successor. The report can only be taken in the context of information provided by sources, not as an official announcement.
