Shreyas Iyer is leading India's T20I side and walked out for the toss on Tuesday against Afghanistan in the second match of the ongoing three-game series.

At Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium, Iyer called correctly and chose to bowl first. That toss win turned out to be a special one; it was his 12th T20I as India's captain, and it pushed him into the record books. The Mumbai batter now holds the world record for most tosses won by a captain in his first 12 T20Is.

Since taking over India's T20I captaincy in June 2026 against Ireland, Iyer has won 11 of his 12 tosses. That's more than Qatar's Mirza Baig and the Philippines' Henry Tyler, who each have 10. Among full-member nations, England's Eoin Morgan and Bangladesh's Mahmudullah share the best mark with nine apiece.

The only toss Iyer has lost so far came against Zimbabwe in the second T20I at Harare Sports Club on June 25, 2026.

Iyer took over from Suryakumar Yadav in June 2026, even though Surya had just led India to the ICC Men's T20 World Cup title that year. On the field, though, results have been tough; India have won only four of the 11 T20Is played under him. He began with back-to-back losses in Belfast against Ireland, then dropped four straight in England. After going winless in his first seven matches as captain, Iyer finally got his first win in Harare on July 23 against Zimbabwe, followed by three more victories (two against Zimbabwe and one against Afghanistan).
